چکیده

In the version of this article originally published, the statement under Materials and Methods “In comparison with PMCON, Si and Mo were found to be the main inorganic chemical elements in PMMTM with the % weight-average of 48.15 ± 26.91% and 28.90 ± 4.16%, respectively, for Si and Mo versus 23.75 ± 15.07% and 0.00 ± 0.00% of the elements in PMCON” should be modified to “In comparison with PMCON, Si and Mo were inorganic chemical elements found in PMMTM and were therefore further investigated in this study for their effects on cells”.

Appalachian Mountaintop Mining Particulate Matter Induces Neoplastic Transformation of Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells and Promotes Tumor Formation

Epidemiological studies suggest that living near mountaintop coal mining (MTM) activities is one of the contributing factors for high lung cancer incidence. The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term carcinogenic potential of MTM particulate matter (PMMTM) exposure on human bronchial epithelial cells. Our results show that chronic exposure (3 months) to noncytotoxic, physiologic...

Chronic Exposure to Particulate Nickel Induces Neoplastic Transformation in Human Lung Epithelial Cells

Nickel is a well-known human lung carcinogen with the particulate form being the most potent; however, the carcinogenic mechanism remains largely unknown. Few studies have investigated the genotoxicity and carcinogenicity of nickel in its target cell, human bronchial epithelial cells. Thus, the goal of this study was to investigate the effects of particulate nickel in human lung epithelial cell...

EMT and Stem Cell-Like Properties Associated with HIF-2α Are Involved in Arsenite-Induced Transformation of Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells

BACKGROUND Arsenic is well-established as a human carcinogen, but the molecular mechanisms leading to arsenic-induced carcinogenesis are complex and elusive. It is not been determined if the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and stem cell-like properties contribute in causing to carcinogen-induced malignant transformation and subsequent tumor formation. METHODS To investigate the molecu...

Poverty and Mortality Disparities in Central Appalachia: Mountaintop Mining and Environmental Justice

Objectives. This study investigated the associations between poverty rates, Appalachian mountaintop coal mining, and age-adjusted total mortality rates to determine if persons exposed to this form of mining experience greater poverty and higher death rates compared to other types of mining or other areas of Appalachia. Methods. Mortality rates, poverty rates, Appalachian designation and mining ...

Myc activates telomerase.

Telomere maintenance has been proposed as an essential prerequisite to human tumor development. The telomerase enzyme is itself a marker for tumor cells, but the genetic alterations that activate the enzyme during neoplastic transformation have remained a mystery. Here, we show that Myc induces telomerase in both normal human mammary epithelial cells (HMECs) and normal human diploid fibroblasts...
